Modifying shipping containers isn’t your typical reno job. These things are made of corten steel, marine plywood, and industrial coatings; they don’t care about your average cordless drill or dollar-store caulking gun.
At The Container Guy, we’ve spent over a decade in the trenches (and containers) testing out the best tools for cutting, grinding, sealing, securing, and modifying containers. In this post, we’re breaking down the must-have tools we actually use, whether you’re cutting in a door, installing vents, or turning a container into a fully functional structure.
Power Tools We Can’t Live Without
1. Angle Grinder (Milwaukee or DeWalt)
- For cutting holes in steel walls
- Great for prepping rusty areas before patching
- Essential for smoothing out sharp edges after cuts
Pro Tip: Get a model with quick-change discs and at least 11 amps. A flap disc + cutoff wheel combo is a container modder's best friend.
2. Reciprocating Saw (Milwaukee M18 Fuel or DeWalt XR)
- Ideal for clean cuts through container corrugation
- Useful for trimming framed openings from the inside
- Fast, powerful, and portable
Use carbide-tipped blades for longer life when cutting steel.
3. Impact Driver + Drill Set (DeWalt 20V MAX or Milwaukee M18 Fuel)
- Drives self-tapping screws with ease (like the ones in our CMW kits)
- Drills pilot holes in steel or wood
- Lightweight and strong enough for job site abuse
Perfect for installing CMW’s steel stud brackets, vents, and man doors without stripping screws or burning out motors.
4. Magnetic Level + Laser Level
- Ensures doors, windows, and wall framing are square and aligned
- Essential when you're working off uneven ground or stacked containers
Containers flex more than you think—level everything twice!
Chemical & Sealing Products We Trust
1. Dow Great Stuff Pro™ Spray Foam
- For sealing small gaps, thermal breaks, or filling corrugations
- Expands evenly and adheres well to metal
- Use around door/window frames and roof vent edges
Pair with CMW’s liner flange kits for a clean and insulated finish.
2. DowSil™ or 3M Marine Sealant
- Flexible, paintable, and weatherproof
- Perfect for vents, window flanges, or anything exposed to Canadian winters
- Stays sealed without cracking or shrinking
Clean steel surfaces with isopropyl alcohol first for best adhesion.
Manual Tools That Make a Big Difference
1. Rivet Nut Tool / Nutsert Kit
- Gives you strong, reusable threads in thin steel
- Ideal for mounting accessories inside without welding
Great for interior panels, shelving, solar hardware, or removable brackets.
2. Aviation Snips + Sheet Metal Shears
- For fine-tuning vent openings or cutting steel trim
- Also great for flashing kits and custom fitting roof caps
3. Heavy-Duty Clamps (DeWalt Quick-Grip or Bessey)
- Keeps wall studs, brackets, or vent frames in place during install
- You will wish you had more clamps. Trust us.
Safety Gear
- Welding gloves (even if you’re not welding)
- Steel-toed boots
- Safety glasses
- Hearing protection
- Dust mask or respirator when grinding or foaming
These aren't optional. Working with containers means working with steel dust, sharp edges, and noise.
